Large pores are usually the visible indentations and openings of pilosebaceous follicles. These are hair follicles that can become enlarged, drawing unwanted attention to their dynamic structure. There are many theories on what causes them including sex, acne, genetic disposition, and aging. ⁽¹⁾

Studies have shown that pore size is usually larger in women than in men. It is also known that pore size is correlated with sebum output, which is much higher during menstruation. ⁽¹⁾This is especially apparent during ovulation and leads to women having more visible pores, something that cannot always be controlled by outside circumstances during their period.

Alternatively, some studies have shown that men often have more visible skin pores than women, more often having prominent blackheads and embedded pore formation.
