What Causes Brow Sagging?

Brow sagging can severely impact one’s appearance and contribute to an overall tired, aged look. Most commonly, it is caused by a weakening of the connective tissues, skin, and frontalis muscles of the forehead- the superficial muscle that provides more elevation of the upper face. (1)Wrinkles and mild sagging around the eye area are often a result of collagen degradation since the skin is so thin and prone to sun damage and other environmental effects.

Specifically, with age, collagen begins to rearrange within the dermis in a more disorganized fashion and develop an overall thinner structure than before. Brow descent is often accompanied by wrinkling between the eyebrows (often referred to as “eleven” lines), more soft tissue buildup just under the brows, and overall misalignment of the brows in general. Sometimes, the lateral area of the brows can descend and convey a somewhat displeased expression and eliminate the brows’ natural arch. This often isn’t just a cosmetic issue. When severe enough, skin can often droop over the upper eyelids, causing a condition called pseudoptosis that can obscure one’s field of vision. The Pure Plasma Difference

Pure plasma uses nitrogen plasma pulses to gently stimulate the fibroblast cells of the dermis, the cells that generate collagen, elastin, and other connective fibers essential for healthy skin structure. Plasma is considered the fourth state of matter, which occurs when a gas achieves a temperature between 5,000 and 10,000 Kelvin (about 8,540 to 17540 degrees Fahrenheit), but Pure Plasma harnesses cold plasma energy that is well-suited for use on soft tissues. Research into cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has shown that it has proven capabilities in reducing microbial loads through sterilization and facilitates better wound healing as a result. Candidates

Preparation

Before a Pure Plasma treatment session, patients should be mindful of keeping their skin hydrated and protected from the sun’s UV rays. Dry skin and even mild sunburns can have a significant impact on the quality of the device’s revitalization efforts. For at least 1 month before their appointment, patients should apply daily facial sunscreen to avoid such complications. We also recommend that they avoid other treatments such as microneedling, laser treatments, chemical peels, Botox, fillers, and bleaching creams.

While changes to skin tone won’t affect the device’s efficacy, any sensitive reactions to these treatments can further damage the skin and increase the risk of scarring. Patients should also refrain from using harsh over-the-counter products such as exfoliants, retinol, or retinoids. Roughly 2 weeks before, patients should stop waxing, plucking, or using hair removal creams on the brows. The day before and the day of the treatment session, we recommend cleansing the skin of all makeup, oil, sweat, and any residue that may be present.

The Treatment Session

Before applying the Pure Plasma device to the skin, the technician should cleanse the skin and consider applying a topical numbing cream to eliminate any discomfort during the procedure. Though the numbing cream could take half an hour to an hour to settle in, the actual treatment session will only take 15 to 30 minutes in total.

Next, they will apply the lightweight handpiece directly to the patient’s skin and apply one pulse of ionized nitrogen gas (plasma) before applying it to a directly adjacent area near the brows. Within the nitrogen tank, the electrodes ionize the gas with thermal energy, then, the gas travels to the handpiece. The emitted plasma energy is cooled to a tolerable temperature, bypassing the epidermis and targeting the dermis layer instead. The technician can adjust the device preset and/or the energy level somewhere between 0.5 to 4 joules. For sensitive areas around the eyes, we recommend lower energy levels.

Recovery and Results

Depending on the patient’s skin sensitivity, they may experience some amount of swelling, redness, mild peeling, and itchiness- similar effects to a minor sunburn. We recommend avoiding the gym and other physical activities for at least 2 days to avoid irritating the skin. Patients can apply an ice pack for a few minutes at a time to reduce the symptoms without interfering with the rejuvenation process.

Over the next 6 weeks to 2 months, patients will begin to experience the effects of the increase of collagen and elastin, reducing brow ptosis and the related wrinkling around the eyes. Clinicians should make efforts to implement a treatment plan that includes more than one session. After proper treatment with Pure Plasma, some patients have reported improvements in their skin texture, laxity, and blemishes for around 1 year.
